How to Set Prices When Reselling Vintage Items: A Guide to Selling Without Undervaluing Your Items

You’ve just received your package of vintage clothes, you’re sorting through them, taking photos… and then comes THE question: How much should I sell this item for?
Too expensive = it won’t sell.
Too cheap = you’ll lose money.
Here’s a simple guide to setting your prices like a pro and maximizing your profit margin without hurting sales.

Understand the true value of a coin
💡 Before setting a price, ask yourself these questions:

  • Brand: Is it Nike, Adidas, Ralph Lauren, or Lacoste?

  • Condition: Is it like new? Slightly worn? Minor stains?

  • Rarity: Is it a classic or a hard-to-find item?

  • Style: Is it currently in fashion? (Y2K, old money, streetwear…)

Example:
A classic Nike hoodie in good condition? Suggested price: between €20 and €35
A rare vintage Nike hoodie from the '90s with an embroidered logo? You can aim for €50–70

Check out the market (and platforms)
🔍 Take 5 minutes to visit:

  • Vinted: Search for the same type of item, sort by “sold”

  • Instagram: Check out what other similar retailers are offering

  • TikTok: Check the prices in the live videos or in the descriptions

You'll soon see the price range depending on the type of part.

Use the 2x (max) rule:
At United Vintage, most of our customers follow a simple rule:
➡️ They aim to resell each item for 2 to 2.5 times its purchase price.

Example using a 10-kg branded bale priced at €170 = 25 pieces inside
→ Average purchase price: €6.80
→ Target resale price per piece: between €14 and €20
→ Comfortable net margin (after expenses)

Adjust your prices based on the platform

  • On Vinted, buyers want low prices → focus on volume

  • On Instagram, you can build your brand even more through visuals and branding

  • On TikTok, use the “love at first sight” effect to sell standout pieces quickly

Run some tests (and keep track of your results)
✏️ Set a price of 25 € → if it doesn’t sell, lower it to 22, then 20.
The idea isn’t to sell everything in 24 hours, but to figure out what works for you.

Be sure to note:

  • What Goes Fast

  • What's Stagnating

  • The sales channel
    → You'll make progress 10 times faster

Conclusion: Setting the right price is a strategic move
You don't need to be a vintage expert to sell successfully. With a little observation, a good understanding of your inventory, and regular adjustments, you can sell profitably without selling off your items at a loss.

And most importantly, it all starts with great inventory:
✔️ Nike, Ralph, Lacoste, Branded, USA, Hoodies…
